Around 1 AM, I laid him down in his cage, nestled into a soft blanket that acted as his nest. For another hour and a half, I continually checked on his breathing and attempted to get him to eat and drink. It was obvious he was resting, letting his eyes droop. Long story short, I held Sora and sat on my bed while running my finger down his back in comfort. Late into the night, I heard him fall and when he started to cry, I flipped on the lights to see the him laying face-down on the white base of the cage. It’s hard for any pet owner to come to terms with the inevitable in this regard. But I never thought that my pets would die. I’ve always known that birds and fish are especially fragile, and rodents and rabbits don’t live as long as a human. I get ridiculously attached to my pets and the fact that they will all someday die is somewhat absurd to me. The thought of losing my animals was never something I dwell on. I’m not even sure when my fish was acquired, he’s just always been present on my desk, swimming around in his tank with obvious apathy. Sora and Yoki were purchased after my previous love bird passed away. Pongo was given to me by my sister when she found herself too busy to take care of the little spotted creature. I received Nivens for Christmas, and she was barely six weeks old. The blue one was Sora, and the white one is Yoki. I was the proud owner of a Russian hamster named Pongo, a dwarf bunny named Nivens McTwisp, a nameless fish, and two budgies. I don’t know if she’ll ever be a mori girl, but I know she’ll always be eager to join me on my forest romps! When a Pet Passes Away – and how I Found My Comfort It’s obvious she’ll always love the nature all of us have been raised around, but she’s such an unique little individual! I had to smile as she explored the forest, discovered insects, and wandered into the water for a few early swimming lessons. She insisted on getting her own water, as you can see in the photos, and that’s just a hint of how independent she can really be. Although she may be scared of spiders (just like I am), there’s no hiding her love for exploring and independence. I’m very thankful for my sister and the way she latched onto the outdoors. Even though we can’t push a lifestyle onto others, it’s always fun when they show an interest in it and even let us show them nifty tricks considering it. On this particular trip, I managed to teach Hannah how to fetch water from an old fashioned pump, assisted her in swimming, and let her watch as we made our meals over the fire. Children find pleasure in the simplest things, making camping a treasure trove of adventures. The wonderful thing about camping is that it’s just the tip of the ice berg, but it’s enough to make many fall in love with nature. A mori girl should never be afraid to allow her family, whether they be siblings or her children, to come camping even when they’re this young – or even younger. My baby sister, Hannah, was younger than two years old when we took her on her first camping trip. All you have to do is chop up some fruit, plop it into your water bottle, and let it set in the fridge overnight so you have a tasteful drink for the next day. Fruit water! I had never heard of it before, and it gives me the taste without added chemicals and sugar. Thanks to my mom, who is a health nut in my opinion, I found something that changed my habits and is helping me lose weight. The fact that I hate plain old water dragged me down even more. Since there’s so much sugar in each serving, there’s no wonder I was struggling so much with getting healthy. When I decided to get in shape, a part of getting healthy included going to gym. After years of fighting something that I will characterize as an addiction (for lack of a better term) to pop, I find it hard to enjoy a drink or even bring myself to have it unless I know it tastes good. Whether or not I feel like drinking something depends on whether or not the drink is flavoured. If you’re like me, you hate plain water! When it’s hot out, I can settle for some nice ice cold water, but for the most part, my preferred beverages range from tea to pop.
